Today we continued with reported speech. I think the girls are finding it hard because of its seemingly easy nature. Reported speech is used to tell another person about what has happened, or about a conversation that has taken place. It is something that they would have learnt before in basic English practice. The reported speech that we are practicing now is more advanced. They are getting a lot of the answers wrong because they are not necessary thinking about the grammar and trying to understand the meaning. It seems they have been taught to look for patterns when answering the questions, which does not work when it comes to this advanced level English. With a little more focus, I think they will be fine, but I am sure they are getting tired of the subject now so I may change it next week and then try again at the end of the year.
